ISTAR's 25th Anniversary Celebration

JaanI was very pleased that I had the opportunity to attend the celebration of the Institute for Stuttering Treatment and Research (ISTAR's) 25th anniversary and Deborah Kully's retirement as executive director of the institute, in Edmonton on March 3, 2012.

Over 140 people attended the event at the University of Alberta Faculty Club, which was also the site of ISTAR’s inauguration celebration in December 1986.

Michael Niven of Calgary did a great job as master of ceremonies at this event.

Keynote speakers at the upcoming ISA conference

katherineThe upcoming International Stuttering Association Congress, taking place in the Netherlands in June, has an impressive lineup of keynote speakers. Included are British writer David Mitchell (author of Cloud Atlas on which the movie was based), American speech-language pathologist and person who stutters David A. Shapiro, and American writer and entrepreneur Katherine Preston. Katherine's book, Out With It: How Stuttering Helped me Find my Voice, will be available in April.

Memorial to Honour Marie Poulos, beloved Speech-Language Pathologist

marieA memorial gathering in honour of Marie Poulos will be held on the grounds of Ottawa’s Rehabilitation Centre, Ottawa General Hospital on Sunday May 15 at 2:00 pm.

Marie was a speech language pathologist who worked at the Rehab Centre’s Stuttering Treatment Clinic from 1979 until she was tragically killed in a car accident in 1991. She was 36.

She was much loved and is still remembered by the hundreds of clients whose lives she touched through her work as a speech therapist.
